The cause of the fire is under investigation

McKinney, Texas (May 13, 2022) – The McKinney Fire Department (MFD) was called to the Avilla Northside, a gated rental community located in the 1200 block of Community Avenue. Crews arrived to find fire and heavy smoke coming from one home. Firefighters went on a fast attack, quickly bringing the fire under control. 

The home was equipped with a 13D sprinkler system that gave the resident inside the time to escape. No one was injured. 

The resident told Fire Investigators a battery charger for outdoor power tools was plugged into an outlet and the outlet started sparking.

“While the cause of this fire is still under investigation, it is a good idea to unplug all battery chargers when they are not in use,” said McKinney Fire Marshal/Asst. Chief Mike Smith.

Fire Departments respond to an average of almost 47,000 home fires involving electrical failure or malfunction each year. (NFPA)
