When Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad’s Assistant Chief Jon Williams recently saw photos on television showing fire trucks partially submerged in water in Kentucky, he realized that his own department might be able to do something to help fire departments in the flood-ravaged eastern part of the state.

He broached the idea of helping out during a board meeting, and the board was immediately on board, discussing the possibility of donating out-of-service fire and rescue equipment and supplies to the area affected by the floods.

Assistant Chief Forrest Conner then found a contact to call to see if there was any interest, and there was. What followed was a group effort by Gloucester VFRS, Mathews Volunteer Fire Department, and Lower King and Queen Fire and EMS to go through their equipment and determine what wasn’t in use but was still usable.

The result was that they came up with a bit of everything a fire department/rescue squad might need, from a 1992 International ...
