Byron D. Hollander, age 86, passed away into the arms of Jesus on July 24, 2022, from melanoma. Byron was born on December 30, 1935, on a farm near Okeene, OK.
Byron went to work at the Oklahoma City Fire Dept. in 1955 and spent 26 years there, the last 12 years as the Oklahoma City Fire Chief. During his years as Fire Chief, he helped to move the department toward modernization and had most of the old fire engines replaced with the latest in fire fighting equipment. He also was heavily involved in helping fire prevention education to become a priority in the OKC community and many other community service projects. He also served as the State Fire Marshall for the State of Oklahoma for 8 years.
Byron was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ruth Hollander, and two brothers, Roland and Robert Hollander. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hollander and two sons, Don Hollander and family of Rogers, Ark and Mark Leckey and family of Prosper, Tx. Also two step-sons, Greg Coney and family of Tulsa, OK. and Steve Coney and family of Watonga, OK, as well and six grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and two great step-grandsons. Also one sister, Janet Fuller and family of Punta Gorda, Fla. as well as a host of wonderful friends.
Byron was an accomplished pilot and an avid golfer. He often said that one of his greatest accomplishments was learning to fly.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the Oklahoma State Firefighters Memorial, 2716 NE 50th, OKC, 73111. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Crossings Community Church Chapel at 14600 Portland Ave, Oklahoma City, OK on August 12, 2022 at 2:00 pm.
