Expo New Mexico is now serving a new purpose, as wildfires have erupted around the state.
“This area right here, we got the Army Corps of Engineers. They have massive generators over here, water purification systems, anything you can think of that needs to be used as equipment to fight the fires," Dan Mourning, general manager of Expo New Mexico said.
The fairgrounds is now a hub for organizations, to inventory supplies and get them to areas affected by wildfires.
“Within eight hours of the FEMA declaration from the governor, from the president, we had resources coming into our property that were immediately being distributed up to the people that need it the most,” Mourning said.
For the past four days, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been working at expo, they are taking in supplies and shipping them out including portable homes for first responders to live in.
“We have 24, 60-foot homes that are coming in that are portable, they will be going up to help the folks that are fighting the fires as well, too,” Mourning said.
But the doors to Expo New Mexico are not just opened to the federal government, people can also bring their animals to the grounds to be housed.
“So they can-do full-service care of their animals like they're at home while they’re here. And if we need to, we can house them in our dorms, you know, so that they can care for their animals at any time and don't have to leave and go to a hotel or whatever,” Mourning said.
Mourning said they are also letting people displaced by the fires take shelter at their grounds.
“These are some very tough times. And it's so great, again, to see New Mexicans rise to the occasion,” Mourning said.
Mourning said if you want to stay at the expo if you are displaced it's pretty easy you can simply show up or call 1-800-432-2080.
