Since I last wrote on Jan. 23, Delaware has suffered at least an additional nine major residential fires that have resulted in four fatalities, six civilian injuries, one firefighter injury and damages beyond $2.8 million. Granted, not all the types of residences have been single-family detached or single-family townhomes, but all types can be sprinklered. Hopefully, the renovation plans include updated smoke alarm systems and residential fire sprinkler systems.

The requirement for residential fire sprinklers will be starting in Milton on April 1. Both Milton and Lewes officials have been working with representatives from the Delaware State Office of the Fire Marshal to review and be familiar with the system requirements. Milford officials are still actively reviewing suggested updates to their building codes, including maintaining the fire sprinkler requirement in new residences.

Fire officials, contact your local municipal and county legislators to educate them on the advantages of the sprinkler systems. If you have staffing challenges in your department, it is imperative that you do all you can to protect your firefighters and EMTs. Also consider how many times police officers arrive prior to fire company personnel and attempt to check on conditions, especially if someone is reported trapped. Residential fire sprinklers provide life safety for all involved, as well as reduce property damage. Does your community really want burned out shells of buildings in your neighborhoods?

On a positive note, the Delaware Fire Sprinkler Coalition has received several offers for side-by-side trailer donations. Once arrangements are hammered out, I am hoping to have at least one trailer for use here in Delaware, if not several. As this project progresses, I’ll keep you informed. Watch for information as well about National Home Fire Sprinkler Week, which will take place the third week of May.

All for now. Stay safe, check those smoke alarms, and build with residential fire sprinkler systems.
