Yesterday, the Village of Homer Fire Department donated fire equipment that was either unneeded or past the mandatory retirement of 10 years.

For most fire equipment, the allotment of use is 10 years after the date of manufacture. The National Fire Protection Association requires fire departments, both career and volunteer, to remove any equipment that is more than ten years old.

That equipment includes garments, hoods, gloves, boots, helmets, first aid kits and other various fire prevention equipment.

The equipment donated by the Homer Fire Department was past its 10 year mark, but was still useful equipment for Ukraine.

X101 Spoke with City of Cortland Firefighter Pavel Andreychuk, who is Ukrainian, and is organizing the donations to be sent over alongside his cousin:

“A lot of volunteer departments that are most active in donating it, ten years they may not get the amount of structure fires that bigger cities will. So they still got a lot of useful life for it, however regulations say that they cannot exceed that 10 year lifespan.” Pavel said to X101

Pavel is working with the Ukrainian Pentecostal Church of Cortland, Together For Ukraine, and several other organizations. The donations are focused on being donated to the Eastern part of Ukraine where the war is hitting the hardest.
