A Dublin bar owner has defended his decision to call out a customer, who brought in their own extension lead to charge their devices.

The man in question went into Oscars Café Bar in Dublin City Centre on Tuesday and proceeded to charge a laptop, phone and tablet for several hours while only ordering two drinks.

The post garnered a mixed reaction on social media, with many either praising the customer for his ingenuity or bashing him for his audacity.

A Dublin bar has gone viral after they publicly called out a customer on social media for bringing in his own extension lead to charge his devises in the pub.

Owner of Oscars Cafe Bar, Ronan Flood spoke to Newstalk on Thursday regarding the bizarre encounter.

'Rather than avoid a confrontation, I plugged the extension out at the wall - thinking that the guest would take the hint. I headed off to one of the other bars, and I came back... and the same guest was still sitting there with the devices plugged in.'

'In fairness, he had got a second drink - but it was like "Ah here, 4.5 hours this is a bit much"', Ronan added admitting he confronted the customer after several hours.

'I went down to the customer and just said to him that "This is excessive use of our electricity, you're kind of taking the proverbial with the plug board".'

The customer went on to ask if he was welcome in the bar, with the owner responding; 'You're welcome to be in the bar, but not if you're excessively using our electricity.'

'He walked out the door - we both had a mutually respectful conversation, and he went on his way. It did grate on me later on in the day... and then it just exploded on social media.'

Mr Flood admits the reaction on social media has been 50/50, with a mixed bag of online commenters either defending or condemning the man.

'We'd see nobody stuck - anyone that comes in and needs to charge up a phone, we're under no illusions here, we know it's not a colossal cost to charge devices. But everything has to be done in moderation, and it wasn't in this case.'

Taking to the bars official Facebook page to air his grievance, Mr Flood wrote; 'One of the most outrageous things we have seen in a while. A customer sits for 4.5 hours, orders two drinks and plugs 3 devices into a plug board that he brought along. #whatenergycrisis.'

Many stood by the decision to call out the customer, with one user writing; 'Plugging in your phone is one thing, but bringing a plug board to charge multiple devices is plainly taking the piss.'

Others called out the bar for the post, with one irritated patron writing; 'This is a customer! Whatever you think, you need to be accommodating and welcoming. It may be the same customer who books a celebration or recommends you to their friends. They chose to walk through your door. Don’t make them want to walk out and never come back.'

What do you think? Is this a show of blatant disrespect to the business or someone just trying to stay afloat?
