Rolls-Royce Refreshes Phantom With Sparkly Headlights, Disc Wheels

Rolls-Royce is remaking the Phantom, but it's not a complete overhaul. The super luxury automaker is adding options to the model that pull in features from Ghost as well as new technological innovations that enhance the sparkle of the eighth-generation car.

The changes to the model are a reflection of the automaker listening to customer desires and combining that information with data gleaned from the company's order bank.

"Phantom occupies an unrivaled position at the very apex of the luxury world," said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in a press release. "As our pinnacle product, it represents the very best of Rolls-Royce design, engineering and craftsmanship – a perfect blend of vision, creativity, the finest materials, skill, patience and precision. With Phantom Series II, we have retained and carefully protected everything our clients' love about this superlative and luxurious item; subtle, yet meaningful enhancements reflect their evolving tastes and requirements."

Up front, there is a new polished horizontal line running between the daytime running lights and above the Pantheon Grille. The assertive character of the grille is enhanced by a fresh illumination feature, which first arrived on company order sheets with the Ghost launch in 2020.

Laser-cut bezel starlights feature on the headlights, drawing a design parallel between the front of the car and the Starlight Headliner inside. At night, the light surrounds appear to sparkle.

New wheel options reflect the growing popularity of Rolls-Royce's Black Badge models. A three-dimensional, milled, stainless steel wheel with dark angular facets is available, fully or partially polished. Buyers can also opt for a disc wheel that features polished stainless steel and black lacquer. The automaker says that the disc wheel option recalls the "romance of 1920s Rolls-Royce motor cars".

The English automaker will now allow customers to order a darkened chrome grille surround, black bonnet reins, windscreen surround and side frame finishers from the company rather than relying on third-party customizations to achieve the look.

Most of the car's cabin remains mostly the same in the Phantom Series II as it was when the model launched a few years ago, however, the steering wheel has been made slightly thicker.

Rolls-Royce owners use the Whispers app to enable their super luxury lifestyle. Unlike other automaker apps, Whispers allows clients to access curated content and experiences tailored for their needs. Now, users will will be able to send an address to navigate a route to directly to the car's infotainment system from the app.

Rolls-Royce Connected technology also allows owners to view their vehicle's location, security status and health on Whispers. Owners can also directly connect with a dealership to request service.

The company will continue to offer Phantom as a 'blank canvas' for owners, allowing complete customization via the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective.

Pricing for the new Phantom was not released, but is expected to be near $500,000 before customizations are factored in.

To showcase the continued bespoke capability of Rolls-Royce, and the changes to the model for Series II, the Phantom Platino has been commissioned by a client. The car draws its name from the silver-white finish of platinum mental.

The interior of the Platino is where it shines most uniquely. Using the launching point of 2015's Phantom Serenity commission, which say hand-painted, hand-embroidered silk in the cabin, the Platino introduces materials other than leather into the space: one created in an Italian mill and the other derived from bamboo.

Both of the materials feature an original repeating pattern based on "an abstract interpretation of the Spirit of Ecstasy". The same design is replicated in the Phantom's Gallery, directly to the right of the occupant's line of sight, and the armrest and center console.

The design is also present on Phantom's timepiece, created in a three-dimensional ceramic and set into an iced finish.

In the car's Starlight Headliner, the illuminated LED points are placed to draw the eye rearwards, with shooting stars following the arc of the pattern.

The cost of the bespoke commission was not released.
