ANN ARBOR, MI - From solar roof installations to bringing air conditioning to several older district buildings for the first time, it has been a busy summer of construction for Ann Arbor Public Schools.
The district is busy with a number of projects funded by its 2019 $1 billion capital bond and its sinking fund that was re-authorized by voters in 2017. That means work scheduled to be done by the fall including updating buildings with new LED lighting upgrades, new building controls, ceiling replacements and fire suppression systems as part of the work.
Ten of the most significant projects taking place at AAPS buildings this summer total nearly $97 million, highlighting the district’s commitment to both updating its oldest buildings and environmental sustainability, said Emile Lauzzana, AAPS Executive Director for Capital Projects.
Once the rooftop solar systems are installed atop three of the district’s schools, AAPS will be the largest owner of solar generation in Washtenaw County, Lauzzana said, with 1.12 megawatts of installed capacity that will save the district $180,000 annually while allowing it to avoid using 1,200 metric tons of carbon emissions each year.
“As we make these significant financial investments in our schools, AAPS continues to be guided by our commitments to quality teaching and learning environments, ensuring the health and safety of our students and staff and maintaining and enhancing our dedication to environmental sustainability,” Lauzzana said.
Here’s a look at some of the most significant work happening in AAPS buildings this summer.
